FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

At Sumatra Wildlife Tours, our highest priority is the preservation of the rainforest and the safety of its inhabitants. We strictly enforce a “No Touch, No Feed” policy. Feeding wild animals makes them dependent on humans, aggressive, and highly susceptible to human diseases. We maintain a strict viewing distance of at least 8–10 meters from all wildlife and ensure we leave absolutely zero waste behind in the national park.

The Gunung Leuser National Park is a vast, protected rainforest, not a zoo or a rehabilitation center. Because the animals are completely wild and free, sightings can never be 100% guaranteed. However, our local guides have spent their entire lives studying these trails and animal habitats. Thanks to their expertise, the success rate for spotting semi-wild and wild Sumatran orangutans, Thomas’s leaf monkeys, macaques, and gibbons on our treks is exceptionally high (around 90-95%).

Orangutans share approximately 97% of their DNA with humans. Because of this close genetic link, they are incredibly vulnerable to human illnesses, ranging from the common cold, flu, and respiratory infections to more severe diseases. A simple virus brought in by a tourist can rapidly spread and be fatal to an entire wild population. If you are feeling unwell or showing signs of a contagious illness before your trek, please inform us so we can discuss alternative arrangements.

We offer trails tailored to various fitness levels, which you can choose based on your physical comfort:

  • Half-Day / Short Trek (2–3 Hours): Gentle paced, minimal steep climbing. Perfect for families with young children, seniors, or those who want a relaxed jungle experience.

  • 1-Day Full Trek (6–7 Hours): Requires a moderate level of fitness. Involves navigating uneven terrain, tree roots, muddy paths, and steep inclines/declines.

  • Multi-Day Overnight Treks (2 to 5+ Days): Physically demanding. You will hike for several hours each day deep into the primary rainforest, cross rivers, and sleep in rustic jungle campsites. Good stamina, balance, and physical health are highly recommended.

Yes, the jungle can be an incredible educational experience for children! We welcome families and usually recommend our Short Trek or 1-Day Trek for families with kids.

  • Children as young as 3–5 years old can join shorter walks (often with the help of an extra porter to carry them when tired).

  • For overnight camping treks, we generally recommend a minimum age of 7–8 years old, as they will need to navigate challenging trails on their own. We always adjust the trekking pace to ensure your family’s safety and comfort.

Absolutely. Every guide working with Sumatra Wildlife Tours is a fully licensed, certified professional and an active member of the Indonesian Tourist Guides Association (HPI). They work in strict compliance with the regulations set by the Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL) authorities. They are highly trained in wildlife behavior, jungle survival, emergency evacuation protocols, and first aid.

For a Day Trek:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing (long pants are recommended to protect against scratches and insects).

  • Sturdy walking shoes, hiking boots, or running sneakers with good grip.

  • A small backpack with a rain poncho, insect repellent (DEET-free preferred), and sun protection.

  • A camera or phone (fully charged) and a reusable water bottle.

For an Overnight Camping Trek (Add the following):

  • A change of dry clothes for the evening/sleeping.

  • A warm sweater or light jacket (the jungle canopy can get surprisingly cool at night).

  • Swimwear and a quick-dry travel towel for river bathing and tubing.

  • A headlamp or flashlight (with extra batteries) for navigating the campsite at night.

  • Personal toiletries, biodegradable soap, and any essential personal medications.

  • A power bank to keep your electronics charged.

Our campsites are set up in beautiful, rustic locations deep in the jungle, usually right next to a freshwater river.

  • Sleeping Arrangements: You will sleep in large, locally styled bamboo-and-tarp tents. We provide comfortable thick foam mattresses, pillows, and clean sheets/blankets to ensure a good night’s rest.

  • Food: Our talented jungle cooks travel with us and prepare incredible, fresh Indonesian meals (such as Nasi Goreng, curry, rendang, and fresh tropical fruits) over an open campfire.

  • Toilets: Camping in the wild means using natural, basic toilet facilities (a designated, private area away from the camp and water sources, following strict eco-friendly protocols).

Sumatra is home to a tropical rainforest, so rain can happen at any time of the year! A downpour is simply part of the authentic jungle adventure. Our guides monitor weather patterns closely. If a heavy storm occurs, we will seek temporary shelter under large canopies or tarps. The trails can become slippery when wet, so your guide will slow down the pace and assist you through tricky sections. We always pack secure waterproof covers for your bags and equipment.

The gateway to Bukit Lawang is Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) or Medan City in North Sumatra.

  • Private Transfer (Recommended): We can arrange a comfortable, air-conditioned private car to pick you up directly from the airport or your hotel in Medan. The journey takes approximately 3.5 to 5 hours depending on traffic. This is the most reliable, stress-free, and flexible option.

  • Public Transportation: You can take a public bus from Pinang Baris Bus Terminal in Medan. While cheaper, it is significantly less comfortable, takes longer, doesn’t have air conditioning, and drops you off at the local bus station outside the village center.

Important: There are no international ATMs in Bukit Lawang. Most guesthouses, local restaurants, and shops do not accept credit cards and operate purely on a cash-only basis.

⚠️ Pro-Tip: Please withdraw a sufficient amount of Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) at Kualanamu Airport or in Medan city center before traveling to Bukit Lawang to cover your personal expenses, extra drinks, souvenirs, and tips.

  • In the Village: Most riverside accommodations and restaurants (such as Lucky Bamboo’ Bungalows) offer free Wi-Fi. The connection speed is generally good enough for checking emails, messaging, and basic browsing, though temporary power or internet outages can occasionally happen in rural areas. Local SIM cards (Telkomsel works best) have decent 4G reception in most parts of the village.

  • In the Jungle: Once you step inside the Gunung Leuser National Park, there is no mobile phone signal or Wi-Fi available. Enjoy the rare opportunity to fully disconnect and immerse yourself in nature!

  • Malaria & Dengue: The risk of malaria in Bukit Lawang is considered low, but Dengue fever exists in tropical climates. We highly recommend using a high-quality insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved clothing during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

  • Leeches: Depending on the season and rainfall, you may encounter jungle leeches. They are completely harmless and do not transmit diseases, though their bites can bleed a little. Your guide can provide specialized leech socks if necessary.

  • Vaccines: We recommend being up-to-date on standard travel vaccines such as Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Please consult your local travel doctor or clinic at least 4–6 weeks before your trip.

Our guides are fully trained in wilderness first aid and carry basic first-aid kits on every trek. For minor injuries or illnesses, there are local clinics and a pharmacy right in Bukit Lawang village. In the rare event of a serious medical emergency during a trek, our team is trained to safely and quickly evacuate guests back to the village, where a private vehicle can transport them to a comprehensive international-standard hospital in Medan. We strongly advise all travelers to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers adventure activities and jungle trekking.
